Twenty-four

Brasik, Spring, 811 FF

Ferremor shifted on the fallen trunk to make room for Alex. She settled next to him, but her gaze was drawn to David, who was playing in the shadows of the clearing. "How long has he been trying?" she whispered, leaning closer to Ferremor. He wrapped an arm and a wing around her. Instead of squealing at the cold of his skin, she snuggled against him. The spring night was unseasonably warm, and she had often said she found his perpetual chill soothing against the heat of the warmer months.

"Since just after he arrived at the orphanage," Ferremor replied with a smirk. David had been stepping in and out of the shadow of the same tree for the previous hour, trying to cross the clearing by moving through the shadows. Ferremor shifted his gaze from David to Alex. If he tried, he could still remember a time when she was awkward and gangly, but she had grown into a very beautiful young woman. Her freckles had faded and now only lightly dotted her golden skin. She had taken to braiding her hair, but a few auburn curls always escaped to tickle her cheeks and frame her wide, brown eyes.

Ferremor had grown fond of looking at her, and had made a habit of traveling the shadows to her father's farm every evening after he woke, just to watch her milk goats and urge the chickens into their coop for the night. He hid in the shadow of the barn, enjoying the way the evening sun brought out the red in her hair and listening to her hum contentedly while she worked. Curled against him as she was at that moment, her heat warming his side, a deep longing awakened in him. It was like nothing he'd ever felt before. She glanced up at him, and he quickly looked away, trying to conceal his sudden swell of emotions behind a carefree smile.

"Two and a half years?" she asked, incredulous. She giggled into her hand and shook her head. "Didn't you tell him that very few shadow masters have the skill? He may never be able to travel the shadows, and if he does learn, it will be years before he has the strength or discipline."

Ferremor shrugged and turned back to her, hoping she didn't notice how his heart was pounding. "I can't bring myself to discourage him," he whispered. "So I let him try." She nodded her understanding, then fell silent. Their eyes met, and she searched his gaze for a long moment. The sounds of the forest around them seemed to fade into the background, and Ferremor suddenly found himself struggling to breathe normally.

"Ferremor?" Alex whispered, her cheeks flushing. Her fingers crept forward and brushed against his palm, and he curled his fingers around hers.

"Yes?" His voice cracked on that one syllable, revealing the torrent of emotion churning in his stomach. His heart raced now, his breath caught in his chest, and all rational thought was blotted out. Her lips parted, and Ferremor swallowed, a fierce pang of longing striking deep into his core.
